The Germans had been slaughtering Jews for nearly a year. A report from the Jewish underground in Warsaw reached the Polish government-in-exile in London in late May 1942 and set the number of Jewish victims in Poland at 700,000 - an underestimate, as it transpired. However, much time passed until the information commanded attention. The BBC did not broadcast the information until June 2, 1942, and not until July 9 did the British Minister of Information hold a joint press conference, along with Poles and Jews, to disclose the contents of the report. Only one newspaper printed the information, and did so on its inside pages. The information was available; awareness was lacking.
